Pentrebychan Crematorium

Pentrebychan Crematorium is on the outskirts of Wrexham and was opened in 1966. The site was previously the location of Pentrebychan Hall.

The first Hall at Pentrebychan is believed to have been built at the beginning of the 17th century by Hugh Meredith of Wrexham. The family traced their ancestry to Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, Prince of Powys. The Hall and estate were described as being among the most extensive in the area and many of the Welsh place names on the estate in the days of the early Merediths are extant today.

The crematorium handles 1600 cremations per year, with 50% from the borough of Wrexham and 50% from other areas. The crematorium grounds extend for 40 acres and are maintained as semi natural woodland (including three pools and Pentrebychan brook). Animal species located in the grounds include heron, badgers, buzzards, snakes, ducks and owls. The grounds also consist of one ungrazed paddock which is kept as a wild meadow and an arboretum. A section of Offa's Dyke passes through the Crematorium grounds.

At Pentrebychan Crematorium we provide a range of choices. People may choose to have remains strewn in any of four gardens:

  • Walled Garden - a formal garden within the walls of the 17th century Hall
  • Wisteria Walk - a new garden, the Wisteria Walk is landscaped in a modern design incorporating shale rockery beds set in lawn turf areas.
  • Lily Pool - situated in the woodlands and surrounded by stately, mature trees and lawns on which the remains are strewn. Waterfowl and other wildlife by the Lily Pool can be seen in the adjacent woodland.
  • Daffodil Meadow - informal in character with daffodils, bluebells, snowdrops and other wild flowers growing in abundance.
