The crematorium at Markeaton carries out around 3000 cremations per year. The main chapel has seating for 98 and the round chapel for 35. Cremations are carried out in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Federation of British Authorities.

Memorial options at the crematorium include the Book of Remembrance, wall plaques, pathway memorial kerbs and a dedicated garden of remembrance for babies and children with two additional memorial options.  

Our office Hours are Monday to Thursday 9.00am to 4.30pm and Friday 9.00am to 4.00pm.

The Book of Remembrance Room is open every day of the year: Monday to Friday 9.00 am to 4.30 pm and Saturday and Sunday 11.00 am to 4.30 pm. On Bank Holidays we are open from 11.00 am to 4.30 pm.

The grounds are open from 9.00 am to 7.30 pm during April to September. From October to March they are open between 9.00 am to 4.30 pm.

Crematorium Facilities

Car Park - There is a small car park adjacent to the main building for use by immediate family members attending a funeral and a large car park with a separate access off Markeaton Lane. Visitors with mobility difficulties are advised to contact the Crematorium Office before attending to arrange nearby parking and wheelchair facilities as there is a short walk to the main chapel areas.

Wheelchairs - There a wheelchair available. Prior reservation is recommended.

Waiting Room - There is a separate waiting room for each Chapel with toilet facilities.

Chapels - The Main Chapel can seat 98 with standing room for approximately 40. Our Round Chapel can seat 37. Seating can be altered to accommodate disabled visitors in wheelchairs. Funeral Service Books and Hymns & Psalms (Methodist) are available at all times.

Service Times - Services take place throughout the day from 9.15am until 3.45pm at half-hour intervals. It is possible to book an extended service time.

Flower Terrace - A flower terrace is provided for the display of floral tributes after each funeral. This is located at the rear of the Chapels. There is also a small flower terrace in front of the Book of Remembrance Room for memorial flowers. Vases and water are available for public use. Visitors are asked not to remove vases from the flower terrace.

Toilets - Situated in the waiting rooms.

Disabled Facilities - There are several spaces allocated in the car park, a ramp is provided for wheelchair access into and out of the Crematorium Building and there are disabled toilets at the Crematorium. If other assistance is required please contact the Crematorium Office.

Searches - Members of public may request searches to be made of the Crematorium records. If a date of death is not available there is a fee payable for this service.

Tours and Visits - We openly encourage visitors, individuals or small groups are welcome to view the cremation process at any time. For Health and Safety reasons we ask that larger groups make a prior appointment.

Dogs - Dogs are not permitted into the grounds of the crematorium, unless they are guide dogs.
