Douglas Borough Crematorium

Bereavement is a universal experience which everyone goes through in their own way.

For more than 112 years Douglas Borough Council has offered the bereaved and their families a professional and caring service at a time when it is most needed.

Any kind of service can be held, such as Humanist, Catholic or Baptist, at either of the borough's chapels.

Douglas Borough Cemetery was founded in 1899. In 1960 the Douglas borough chapel was converted to allow for cremations, the first of which was carried out on December 12th 1961.

Burials at the cemetery on Glencrutchery Road are limited, with a few exceptions, to availability of existing grave spaces. There is now also a lawn cemetery on Johnny Watterson’s Lane.

There is chapel seating for 100 people at the borough cemetery and for between 70 and 80 at the lawn cemetery.

Music on CD or cassette can accompany the service; additionally singers or bands can be accommodated.

Cremations can be held on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday at 10:00, 10:45, 11:30, 13:15 or 14:00. Burials can take place between the hours of 10:00 to 15:00.

We hope that you will find this information useful, but if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact the bereavement services office on the number shown on this page.

Book of Rememberances

The volumes of the Book of Remembrance provide a simple and lasting memorial which is on display 365 days of the year. The book contains a page for each day of the year and the pages are turned daily. It is split into three volumes Jan – April / May – Aug / Sept – Dec and one date covers two pages.

Entries into the book are based on the date the deceased passed away.

The pages of the book, which is leather bound, are made from sheepskin parchment. Along with your entry you may also have an emblem, i.e rose or coat of arms. Prices for these are available upon application.

If you are unable to come to the cemetery on the anniversary to view an entry, bereavement services staff will be more happy to turn the page back for you.

Please be aware that the books are sent away for inscriptions, so when the Jan-April book is on display the May – Aug edition is being inscribed therefore it cannot be seen.

The volumes are displayed in glass cabinets in the Hall of Remembrance. The cemetery and Book of Remembrance are open every day from 08:00 to 15:50.
