Canford Crematorium, designed by the City Architect, was opened in December 1956. The general design of the building is a modern interpretation of a traditional form to blend with the residential nature of the neighbourhood.

An avenue of silver birch trees lead from the cemetery entrance to the Crematorium Chapel and beyond.

The chapel has been carefully designed to have the "feel" of a church, while being acceptable for people with widely differing tastes. The interior walls are of stone, the pew seating, pulpits and most other joinery, of oak.

The floor of the chapel is carpeted with the exception of the raised altar section and area of seating.

The cross, affixed above the altar, may be concealed if this is your wish.

The central catafalque, upon which the coffin rests during the cremation service, is fitted with a lift mechanism to lower the coffin into the crematory area, that is equipped with four gas-fired cremators.

There are two pulpits, one to the left and one to the right hand side of the catafalque. The pulpit to the left is often used by family and friends who wish to contribute to the service.

The Porte Cochere provides shelter for the funeral vehicles on arrival, and the cortège will then pass through the Narthex into the chapel. At the end of the service mourners leave by the side doorway at the rear of the chapel and make their way towards the Floral Tribute area to view the tributes provided for the funeral.

To the left of the Narthex there is a waiting room with toilet facilities. To the right the Book Room, where the Books of Remembrance are displayed and where fresh, cut flowers may be placed in the vases provided.

The modern electronic organ is situated in the organ loft above the Chapel entrance and incorporates a tape/CD facility, which will be operated by the organist if required.

Organ music is played at all services unless we receive specific instruction to the contrary.
