The aim of the section is to provide a professional, caring and quality service to all. The nature of the work is often very demanding, and can sometimes be stressful; however, all staff are dedicated to achieving these aims, and are often on hand just to listen. Indeed, there is a 'coffee and chat' session run by volunteers held on most Saturdays and Sundays so that people who have lost someone can have someone to talk to.
The actual section operates one Crematorium and three Council-owned Cemeteries, and also provides a complete burial and maintenance service for the Jewish Cemetery in Stock Road. There is also a Garden of Remembrance on the Sutton Road site, which covers five acres, and includes formal gardens, a sunken rose garden and a rock garden, and in 1995 the Duchess of Norfolk opened the Woodland Memorial Garden, which includes a special children's feature.
