South Bristol Crematorium, designed by the City Architect’s Department, was opened in October 1971. Set in a landscaped precinct, the Crematorium is contemporary in character, with facing brickwork used extensively both outside and inside the buildings.

Pew seating, pulpit and most of the joinery work are in Agba, a light coloured hardwood of straight-grained appearance.

The floor of the chapel is carpeted, with the exception of the area of seating.

The cross, affixed above the central altar table, may be concealed if this is your wish.

The Catafalque, upon which the coffin rests during the cremation service, is to the right hand side of the chapel and fitted with a lift mechanism to lower the coffin into the crematory area, that is equipped with four gas-fired cremators.

The Porte Cochere provides shelter for the funeral vehicles on arrival, and the cortège will then pass through the Narthex into the chapel. At the end of the service mourners leave by the doorway at the side of the chapel, through the cloister and into the Floral Tribute area where they may view the tributes provided for the funeral.

To the right of the Narthex there is a waiting room and toilet facilities. To the left, beyond the Vestry, a fully glazed lobby leads to the Book Room, where the Books of Remembrance are displayed. Pot plants may be brought and vases are available for the placement of fresh cut flowers. An external entrance is provided to allow independent access to this Room

The modern electronic organ is situated on a platform over the Chapel entrance and incorporates a tape/CD facility, which will be operated by the organist if required.

Organ music is played at all services unless we receive specific instruction to the contrary.
