Distington Hall Crematorium is set in very pleasant surroundings in the north of the Borough and serves the majority of Copeland and most of the south of Allerdale. Management of the Bereavement Services is co-ordinated through the office on this site by the Crematorium and Cemeteries Manager.
Within the grounds and close to the main Crematorium building, where committal services are conducted, there is a Chapel of Remembrance. Here bereaved families can leave a lasting record and dignified memorial to their departed loved ones by having an entry inscribed in the Book of Remembrance, which is displayed in the Chapel. Vases are also provided in the Chapel to enable floral tributes to be left.
The Book of Remembrance is opened each day to display the pages for that day of the year, so that the inscription may be seen on every anniversary of the date of death. During opening hours the Crematorium staff will gladly assist anyone who wishes to view an inscription on a date other than the anniversary.
The Chapel of Remembrance and the Crematorium office are open from:
9.00 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Friday, 11.00 am to 4.00 pm Saturday & Sunday
Christmas Day & New Years Day opening hours are from 1.30 pm to 4.00 pm
Since the Crematorium opened in 1974 approximately 22,000 cremation services have been conducted there. In 2002, as a memento for each of those individuals, the Parks Department planted that number of spring bulbs throughout the Crematorium grounds.
