Accrington Crematorium
An application was made by Accrington Council in 1954 to The Ministry of Housing and Local Government to turn the Non-Conformist chapel in Accrington cemetery, which had fallen into disuse, into a crematorium, which could serve an area of 120,000 people. The operation cost £15,000 and on the 10th September 1956, Accrington Crematorium held it's first cremation service.

In the first year, Accrington carried out 701 cremations and this has steadily increased to around 1,000 cremations per year. Some residents from Rossendale and the Ribble Valley also come to Accrington for their funeral services. The staff at Accrington are fully trained and Accrington Crematorium is proud to be a member of The Federation of British Cremation Authorities which observe strict regulations governing the cremation of a deceased person.

From time to time, requests are made by families to view the crematorium, including the crematory area. The requests are made either because people have been upset because they have been misinformed about the process of cremation, or that they are interested and curious. Our staff will be pleased to escort anyone who wishes to view the crematorium and will be pleased to answer any questions that the visitor may like to ask. Please telephone the cemetery office to make an appointment if you feel that you would like to know more about the cremation process.

Memorialisation

Accrington also has ways in which you may remember a loved one. They are as follows;

The Book of Remembrance

The Book of Remembrance is situated in the annex of the Crematorium Chapel in Accrington Cemetery and displayed in its protective cabinet. With a page provided for each day of the year, it is opened daily on the appropriate page so that entries may be viewed on the anniversary of the date of death. If it is not possible to visit on the anniversary the Chapel Attendant will be pleased to open the appropriate page on request.

Inscriptions in the Book may take the form of a two, three, five or eight line entry and in the case of all except two and three line entries, this may be accompanied by a badge or emblem of your choice. If an unusual design is required, it may be possible to work from a reference supplied by the applicant. It is also possible to reserve space below an inscription for future use if required.

The Chapel is open at weekends if you wish to spend a few moments in prayer or thought. This may not be possible throughout the week as funeral services are likely to be in progress. The cemetery office will be able to advise you of the quieter times during the day.

Book of Remembrance viewing hours: -

Monday - Friday 9.00 am - 5.00 pm

Bank Holidays, Saturday & Sunday 1.00 pm - 4.00 pm

Miniature Books and Memorial Cards

It is possible to have copies of the inscription as it appears in the Book of Remembrance. These are particularly suitable both as a personal keepsake and for sending to friends and relatives who may not be able to visit the Book to see the original entry. Please contact the cemetery office if you wish to make an entry in the Book of Remembrance or if you wish to purchase a memorial card or book.
